Housing Occupancy Status for Mid-Shore Counties

Housing Occupancy Status for Mid-Shore Counties
Published June 10th, 2025

This interactive dashboard provides a clear visualization of housing unit trends in Maryland’s Mid-Shore counties—Caroline, Dorchester, and Talbot—broken down by occupancy status and tenure (owner- vs. renter-occupied). Using data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates (2010–2023), the dashboard enables users to examine how housing stock and occupancy patterns have shifted over time.

Each county’s data can be viewed by toggling the buttons at the top of the dashboard. The charts are organized to show:

  • Total Housing Units
  • Occupied Housing Units
  • Owner-Occupied Units
  • Renter-Occupied Units

For example, in Caroline County, the total number of housing units has remained relatively stable, while renter-occupied units have increased from 2,866 in 2010 to 3,428 in 2023—suggesting a growing share of rental housing. Owner-occupied units remain the majority, though they have fluctuated slightly over time.

The clean, user-friendly layout makes this dashboard a valuable tool for planners, researchers, and community leaders seeking insights into local housing dynamics, development patterns, and tenure trends across the Mid-Shore region.

Key Features:

  • County toggle (Caroline, Dorchester, Talbot)
  • Time series comparison (2010, 2020, 2022, 2023)
